We were all born with open hearts. Through the events of our lives, we have learned to guard and protect our hearts. For some of us, our protections are quite fierce. For others, they may no longer be needed. For many of us, our protections are too much in use when we want to be more connected, more honest, more kind. Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) is a skills-based program to practice choosing how open or closed your heart needs to be – both when, and to whom, including to ourselves.
What is Mindful Self Compassion?
Combining mindfulness and compassionate practice, the Mindful Self-Compassion program was developed by researcher Kristin Neff and psychologist Christopher Germer. Their research has shown that self-compassion enhances emotional well-being, life satisfaction, optimism and social connectedness. This program has been shown to increase happiness.
MSC has been shown to reduce stress, anxiety, emotional avoidance and depression. Self-compassion is strongly associated with a reduction in feelings of shame. It has also been connected to better physical health.
What Will this 8-Week Course Look Like?
The group will meet every week over 8 weeks. Each session will last approximately 2.5 hours, interweaving discussion with practice exercises. There will be one half-day retreat as well.
Discussions and exercises will help you soften your attitude towards others and towards yourself, even when you have made a mistake or let somebody down. You will practice handling difficult emotions with more strength and ease. You will practice treating yourself more like a good friend, easing the habits of criticism and blame. You will discover the transformative powers of your own generous spirit. This spirit can lift you up and can sustain those around you.
Each week, we will learn exercises to practice at home so that your knowledge and skillset grow throughout the course.

UCLA-Trained Mindfulness & Meditation Teacher (IMTA certified)
Through a long-winding journey Norma has landed upon her true calling; sharing the practices of mindfulness, meditation, & self-compassion. At her core, Norma has always longed to deepen her own experiences through meditation. Through her training in UCLA's Mindfulness Awareness Research Center, she evolved into a meditation teacher and guide. Norma has also been trained in the Mindful School's curriculum. Her greatest intention is to cultivate a safe and authentic environment for others to become closer to who they really are through the practices of self-compassion & meditation. She believes we all have the wisdom inside ourselves to heal and become more at ease in our busy lives. Throughout her demanding career as a tv producer/writer in news and entertainment, she discovered great freedom through meditation. She is honored to be sharing her love for it through this Mindful Self-Compassion course.
KATE SHEEHAN, lcsw
Kate looks for opportunities to foster joy and relish social connection. As a strengths-based psychotherapist, she collaborates with clients on shaking off habits and patterns that no longer serve their purpose. She supports children and families in the UCLA Semel Institute, with specific expertise in anxiety, attachment, trauma, and eating disorders. Prior to focusing her efforts on clinical work, her therapeutic efforts evolved through the performing arts. She is a classically trained musician who worked for a decade as a theater producer/director/actor. A practitioner of meditation, she has also had a yoga practice since toddlerhood when she was taught by her inspirational grandmother. Being a witness to others’ vulnerability, courage, and growth is one of the core joys and privileges of her day.

Class to be held at
WMN Space is a conscious space for women to gather in service to their own healing as an
offering to the community. The intention of WMN Space is to support women wherever they are on their own journey and offer healing modalities that include; women’s health, body work, therapy, spiritual counseling, workshops, women’s gatherings and events.
Class meets on Tuesday evenings, 7:00-9:30pm August 7th - October 2nd. (NOTE: We will NOT meet on September 18th) There will be one half-day retreat on date TBD.
